Brief Description
-
Abstract
-
The Maschler German-English Dictionary at Exeter uses the
"agrep"
program to search a word list currently comprising just over 110,000 words.
-
The dictionary is provided "as is" without any express warranty against
accuracy and completeness.
Please feel free to send any suggestions or comments to Tobias
Maschler.
-
Treatment of German Umlauts
-
The German Umlauts can be inserted in two ways:
-
As usual,
via the keyboard or Umlaut buttons.
-
Or as a transliteration:
Umlaut |
ä |
ö |
ü |
Ä |
Ö |
Ü |
ß |
Transliteration |
ae |
oe |
ue |
Ae |
Oe |
Ue |
ss |
So "Staedter" produces the same results as "Städter".
-
Search Options
-
Error Tolerance
-
Best Match
This is generally slower than searching with "no errors" selected.
-
No Errors
This is the quickest way to look up text.
-
One Error
The search engine will display the most accurate results first.
-
Case Sensitive Search
In general, the search engine is case-insensitive; for example searching
for "lake" produces the same results as "Lake"and "LAKE".
Switching this option on will enforce case sensitivity.
-
Search for Word Parts
Normally, the search engine only finds whole words. Selecting
"Search
for Word Parts" will also find words containing the search string.
So searching for "start" will not only find
"Start",
but also "Warmstart" and "Startzeit" as well.
-
Search Method
-
The "agrep" program provides the basic engine to search the word
list. "agrep" is available as part of the
glimpse
package for Linux. In use, when a transliteration of an umlaut occurs
in a pattern, the search engine will look for that pattern as well as the
pattern with the umlaut replacing the transliteration.
